Jan Sierhuis (1928–2023)

We are saddened to hear of the passing of artist Jan Sierhuis (1928–2023). Sierhuis was an expressionist painter who mainly painted landscapes, portraits and dancing people. He had a summer house in Spain and it was there that he was touched by flamenco. This influence is frequently seen in his works, a flamenco feeling in romantic expressionism.

In 1945, he was admitted to the evening course at the Rijksakademie, which he left in 1948 after a conflict. Between 1953 and 1956, however, he would return and study here again. In the years 1957 and 1958, he continued his training in Antwerp at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1948, he was involved in the CoBrA group but  he did not join them because of his young age. In the eighties and nineties he was an advisor at the Rijksakademie. 

With his typical Amsterdam sense of humour, his enormous knowledge about (the history of) painting, he meant a lot to the residents and advisors of the Rijksakademie.
