Alex Walker’s work focuses on the material dimensions of language, in particular the presentation and interpretation of written (and printed) text. He is usually working on book design projects, together with writers, artists and small-scale publishers. Most recently he has been working as a designer for Divided, a London and Brussels based imprint publishing fiction, poetry, philosophy, cultural analysis, and intergenre books.
As a tech fellow in the Rijksakademie’s Print Lab, he is currently developing ‘Rijksakademie Resources for Artist Self-Publishing (RRAS-P)’, a collection of tools and references to support residents interested in self-publishing.
This will include sample charts and guides for the Print Lab’s risograph and OKI (white toner) printer, a physical library of paper samples available to browse in the Print Lab (accompanied by an online database and glossary of terms related to paper properties). It will also feature a reading list pointing to titles in the Rijksakademie Library which either theorize artist books, typography and book design, offer technical guidance or otherwise serve as examples of interesting design and production choices. Additionally, several online directories listing printers and binders, small-scale publishers, independent bookstores, and artist book fairs. Eventually these resources will be published together under an ‘RRAS-P’ microsite, and within the Rijksakademie’s Material Library.
