Library Nights
Marike Schuurman – Today is not possible
Rijksakademie Reading Room
entrance free, RSVP here
‘Today is not possible' consists of a selection of photographic and film works from the last 25 years. The Berlin based Dutch artist Marike Schuurman (1964) uses the medium of photography to investigate the ambiguity of human-made spaces and landscapes. Starting point of Schuurman’s work are stories or situations that she observes and deal with absurd human attempts to change or influence the world around them. The artist uses a specific photographic technique for each theme, as well as reflecting on and illuminating the medium of photography and the associated production processes in her work.
‘Today is not Possible' is the most recent project of artist and Rijksakademie alum Marike Schuurman. For this book presentation, Marike will engage in conversation with poet, visual artist and Rijksakademie alum & advisor Maria Barnas, who is also a contributor for the publication. They will read some book excerpts and share with the audience insights on the artists’ research.

Starting from April, we will kick-off ‘Library Nights’ at the Reading Room. The Reading Room will open to the Rijksakademie community and public in general to activities organised by Rijksakademie residents and alumni. We want to explore the potential of this platform as both intimate and collective space, that invites conversation, sharing and critical thinking. The format is open to experimentation, but will include public talks, presentations and screenings.
